Is this event just about Black Panther?

Wakandacon is a 3-day, family-friendly convention celebrating art, community, technology, and self-expression. The event focuses on looking ahead to a future filled with arts, science and technology as seen through a black lens. While the event was inspired by Black Panther, the content speaks directly to a wide range of topics important to the Black diaspora, with a particular focus on technology and women’s empowerment.

You'll find the content that you might be used to at a traditional nerd convention - comics, cosplay, gaming, and vendors! You'll also be exposed to an incredible variety of new, intellectually stimulating content! Wakandacon is a brand new kind of convention, and has to be experienced first-hand!

When is this happening?

The first Wakandacon was August 3-5th 2018 in Chicago at the Hilton Downtown Chicago, 720 S Michigan Ave.,Chicago, IL 60605. More events are coming soon! Sign up to our email list to stay up to date with the latest details.

Do I have to be black to come to Wakandacon?

No! Our event is open to everyone!

We hope that people of all backgrounds will come and have fun at Wakandacon! We do want to note that almost all of the content will be focusing on the Black experience and will be from the point of view of almost exclusively Black people. There will be political and cultural conversations that are centering Black voices. Hearing some of those conversations will probably be eye-opening and very enlightening if those conversations aren't regularly happening in your circle. For some of those conversations and discussions, there may not be many non-Black people in the room.

Any non-Black attendees should be aware that their voices may not be centered and much of the experience might not speak directly to them. It should go without saying but sometimes it still must be said - we hope that all attendees of any background or race will be respectful and come with an open mind.

We welcome everyone, and hope that everyone will learn something new and share ideas.
